"match, set" Mary Joe Fernandez traded tennis whites for Vera Wang to wed sports manager Tony Godsick As you might expect from a sports manager and a tennis player, Tony Godsick and Mary Joe Fernandez know how to play the game of love-all. Godsick (a vice president of the IMG agency and manager of Monica Seles) proposed to Fernandez on a Bahamian beach at sunset. Their elegant wedding in her hometown of Miami was just as romantic. Mary Joe remembers, "We were smiling the whole time." the ceremony: Mary Joes childhood priest and a rabbi friend of Tonys family both officiated at the union, which took place on April 8 at the Cathedral of Saint Mary. "We had a great singer, Giselle Rios, perform between readings," says Mary Joe. the guests: More than 300 friends and family members attended, including fellow tennis players Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario, Tony Hess, Billie Jean King and Justin Gimelstob. the bride wore: Mary Joe borrowed a diamond tiara with matching drop earrings from Fred Leighton. She wore a strapless organza Vera Wang gown with a satin bow at the waist and lace at the hem. "It was the first or second dress I tried on, and it made me feel like Cinderella, so I said, "This is it," she recalls. the reception: The party at the Indian
Creek Country Club in Miami Beach began with a
sunset cocktail hour, then a lavish buffet
dinner, followed by dancing to El Equipo, which
provided both an 18-piece big band and an
eight-piece Latin band in tribute to Mary
Joes Spanish and Cuban roots. "It was
so much fun," says Godsick. "We might
do it again in 10 years; all our friends want us
to." by Eleni N. Gage |
